If you know me at all, you know that it is my ultimate goal to be the world’s biggest know-it-all. I want to know EVERYTHING. I think I’m on the right path so far. I know a lot of stuff, on a lot of different topics, but, as you may imagine, the quest to be the world’s biggest know-it-all is one of those never-ending types. So, I am always looking for new ways to expand my knowledge.
Obviously, I am an avid Wikipedia fan. I can spend days browsing different articles, and absorbing it all (I have a fantastic memory. I’ve been pinpointed many times for my impressive “attention to detail.”), pulling out particularly interesting tidbits, to tear apart and analyze. For fun, I write essays detailing subjects I find particularly interesting. My friends think I am insane, but I find essay writing to be a fun way to organize information and thoughts!
It’s somewhat surprising that, at nearly 20 years of age, I have yet to commence post secondary education. I want to, oh so desperately (And I am hoping it’s not ALL about being drunk, like Nellie says it is. Hopefully, I will be able to find some fellow dorks to hang out with). But I, 1) Am not sure of EXACTLY what I would like to study and turn into a career, and 2) I don’t have the money for it. So, what does one aspiring know-it-all do when she needs to kill time and make money?
She starts work, in the organic foods section of her local supermarket.
In the past, I’ve been a cashier at both Canadian Tire and The Home Depot. I learned a bit about automotive, and hardware at both places, but I find being a cashier to be endlessly boring. So THIS time around, I beat them from putting me into cash, by blurting out something along the lines of “If I have to touch meat, I will be ill.” Okay, so, not the most mature of remarks, but we all know how simple it is to get a job at a supermarket here. Fourteen year olds work there at night! I don’t mean to be a snob, but it’s true! Even the lady who interviewed was impressed by my past experiences and high school rankings. Not exactly wanting to work in the cosmetics or clothing side of things either (being a girly girl already gives me quite a bit of experience in those areas), I hemmed and hawed until the option of organic foods was brought up.
To be fair, I have a bit of experience in this area. In Katimavik we took Healthy Living, and we did things on organic gardening, etc. I have friends who are allergic to eggs and gluten, so I’ve tried a few of those types of products. Also, I was a vegetarian for 2 years, so many of our tofu and soya products are familiar to me. What really fascinates me are the different herbs and vitamins and such.
What could be more exciting for a know-it-all dork than hundreds of bottles with labels just WAITING to be read? Or, out GIANT book of ailments, and what you can take to heal them?! Almost nothing, that’s what, and I’m quite pleased to be able to be paid to learn about all of them in my spare time!
Ahaha, I want to be a know it all as well, but if someone knows it all what will they learn after that :P. The organic foods section seems like an interesting place to work!
I know I’m probably a few posts too late but I must say your new layout is fantastic and really cute!
I stalk wikipedia as well! If I read something, and I don’t recognize a certain person or place, you betchur sweet ass I head on over to Wikipedia to read up on it. Sometimes I read about old cultures and religions for fun. /nerd
I love learning lots, but I dislike the label know-it-all. So I don’t know what I want to be/be called. :/ I’m thinking that I want to be seen as a 21st century female version of a Renaissance man (or as a scholar or as genius :P).
I study things on my own and I look things up, but writing essays - no. Maybe soon, but I haven’t written any for fun just yet. But! I’m interested in seeing some of yours.
Wikipedia <3 Sometimes I read up on topics I am extremely familiar with and find mistakes on there or some really stupidly phrased ideas! I should become a contributor but I’m far too lazy.
I’ve dabbled in organic food but find nothing really tastes all that different apart from meat. Organic meat is freaking awesome but my family can’t afford it (we eat meat practically every night -,-).
School can be expensive. But there are always scholarships and/or financial aid you know.
Wikipedia is a great go-to source for quick answers to things. Since I work with elementary school kids though, I have to warn them not to use it and rely on it. They need to learn how to use “real” resources first. :P
I don’t think anyone can know everything though. Good luck on becoming the world’s biggest know-it-all.
It really depends on what type of major you’re after.
I did, Economy for 2 years (with a break of 1 year in between) and aside from hating the “relevant” subjects with a passion (I liked Maths and Computing… LOL), I was amazed at the idiocy of most of my classmates. They were mainly blond girls, who were thin and dressed trendy… and that’s it.
I’m of course not saying that there weren’t such specimens in the computing major classes, but most people there had some sort of inkling in regards to what planet they’re on.
At the end of the day, university is what you make of it. I haven’t been partying or getting drunk, nor did I kill myself getting super high grades.
)
Then again, I wasn’t particularly happy with college life… but I did learn a lot of very useful things (coupled with a lot of very useless things
Soo good luck with your new job. If I were you I’d have picked the cosmetics section (not that I know anything about that… but =P )
I love reading different articles at Wikipedia too
Meh, I’m 20+ and I still don’t have a degree in post secondary education. Mainly, because I just can’t decided what I want to study. I’m lucky enough to live in a country where school are government funded, so I don’t have to worry about tuitions.
I think selling organic foods sounds very interesting, actually. Though, I would’ve chosen the clothing section
I can totally relate to browsing and reading Wikipedia articles, but writing essays? NO. :P
I LOVE reading wikipedia… though I get made fun of a lot for doing it.
... I sometimes write essays for fun, or help others with their own school assignments. But… that doesn’t count! They ...
