I’m Canadian. I’m obsessed with music. Naturally, I love Canadian music. While Canadian musicians can be just as emo as the next tormented soul, so often, they are not. Canadians love to opt for carefree, fun, sing-a-long-type songs, and I am here to share some of these with you today.
These songs are excellent for days when you may be feeling a little bit down. Or when you’re just chilling on a +18C day (like I am today! Big difference from the blizzard we had on Thursday, eh?)
- “When The Night Feels My Song,” by Bedouin Soundclash. The chorus says “Hey Beautiful Day,” in it, so how can you possibly NOT feel like the world is gorgeous when listening to this song? These guys put on an awesome live show- I saw them at the Juno kick-off concert Music Lives Here last week. Completely stellar.
- “Nowhere With You,” by the Joel Plaskett Emergency. This song became terribly popular on a Zellers commercial- how much more Canadian can you get? “Hey good lookin’ why the frown? You always look better when it’s upside-down!” (Excuse the YouTube clip, it was the best quality sound, but has pictures of Pirates of the Caribbean, which is nice, but not Canadian, ha ha.)
- “Midnight Rain,” by Wide Mouth Mason. Always biased, I always include these guys in all of my music lists. I’ll keep it straight up- these guys are my friends. :-P But, still, their music was awesome BEFORE I got to know them! So, it’s all good. They look SO YOUNG in this video, but then again, I think I was 10 when I was obsessed with this song. “‘But everything is turning out turning out, but everything is coming out coming out, the sun will shine on solid ground, tomorrow when it comes out!!”
- “The Rest Of My Life,” by Sloan. I also saw these guys at Music Lives Here! So fab! Most Canadians get off on the line “One thing I know about the rest of my life: I know that I’ll be living it in CANADA!” and I am no exception. But I also continue to sing the chorus. So catchy and fun!
- “If I Had A Million Dollars,” by the Barenaked Ladies. These guys are the epitome of carefree Canadian music, and this is their claim to fame!! I’ve yet to find a Canadian who doesn’t know the chorus to this song at least. “We wouldn’t have to eat Kraft Dinner! But we would eat Kraft Dinner!” It’s true. I will eat Kraft Dinner until the day I die. Even if I am some rich entrepreneur-type with a mansion and a pool boy.
So, there you have just FIVE examples of the awesomeness that is the carefree Canadian music. There is so much more to discover, and I encourage you to take a look around!! And certainly be sure to add these songs to the top of your summer play list!
The Barenaked Ladies never fail to cheer me up. <3
I was just listening to “If I Had A Million Dollars”. Amazingness.
Oh you know I’m totally checking these songs out when I get home… Canadian music ftw.
Haha, that’s a great list. I agree about When the Night Feels My Song especially. Hearing that song ALWAYS makes me happy.
*sings*
Hey, hey hey hey!!
I love the Barenaked Ladies too! But If i had to pick one song, I’d pick “Brian Wilson”. Ammmaaaaaazing song.
All these are great pics! I love how you plug canadian stuff. *cheers*
I don’t know any of those singers/bands except Barenaked Ladies. I love the Barenaked Ladies! They’re so funny and their songs just get me in a good mood.
I love When the Night Feels my Song…oh gosh Bedouin Soundclash makes such feel good music :). I love #2 as well! I also love Sloan’s song The Other Man. Wow, Canadian music is just pure magic.
*looks up #3 and #4*
Bedouin Soundclash is amazing, in fact, I was just listening to that song!
*sings* I would buy you a fur coat, but not a real fur coat, that’s cruel…
