Imagine, if you will, the following movie:

Our protagonist is successful, sassy, and gorgeous. Suddenly, they realize that they are in love with their best friend. After some hemming and hawing, they decide to pluck up the courage and confess their true feelings! But, their best friend has something to tell them as well!! — They’re getting married to some other successful, sassy and gorgeous person! Oh no! Obviously, weddings are huge and important events. And it is crucial that best friends are involved, so the protagonist is given the highest position of honour in the wedding.

The protagonist is thrilled– but only because they can now use this new found power to sabotage the wedding, and win the best friend back for themselves! Thus, we are dragged along through silly hair-brained schemes, which ultimately lead nowhere, because, believe it or not (!) the best friend actually loves the person they are marrying!

Now, I really liked this movie when it was called My Best Friend’s Wedding. I love Julia Roberts, and the entire cast, really. It was a memorable film, with a nice message, some funny bits, a great musical interlude, etc.

So, will I still like it now that it stars Patrick Dempsey, has been renamed Made of Honour? According to some reviews I have read, probably not. Although I do adore Patrick Dempsey, and he is a cutie– how many times can they make the same movie? It is a common plague in Hollywood. I’ve, honestly, seen Pride and Prejudice more often than I can probably pinpoint, since it is often ripped from the English countryside and hidden beneath Hollywood A-Listers and glam. It’s a lovely story, yes, but shouldn’t Hollywood writers strive for creativity? Writing is their job!!

And, can I just say, that if that whole “art imitates life,” thing is true (which I believe it is, since my life always reflects my art, and vise versa), I never want my best friend to be married, ever. Because, really, I’m not strong enough to have those kinds of feelings and what is more, I’m certainly not clever enough to come up with such outlandish schemes!
