Upon the return from my fabulous weekend away, I was, promptly, stricken with a cold. I swear, I am the only person I know who is plagued with a cold every summer. My throat is cut up, my nose is runny, I have a headache, a fever, have made multiple visits to the bathroom and up until an hour ago, I could do little more than lie horizontally, and complain to Rachael over IM.

Now, I am feeling quite a bit better. And here is why:

I’m sitting in my livingroom with a giant fan oscillating around me. The fan makes me cold, then moves away to prevent me from becoming too cold!

I’ve made some pasta and cheese! Pasta and cheese is one of my favourite foods. I finally felt well enough to try to choke some down, and actually enjoyed it. “Starve a fever, feed a cold,” they say, and I’ve decided to give that old adage a go.

I have a fizzy drink. BURN, THROAT, BURN!!!! I normally dislike pop. The carbonation makes my eyes burn, and gives me a headache (I often open a can of pop and let it sit for a day until it is flat. I love flat pop.). And, in general, they are far too sweet for me to handle on a regular basis. But, I definitely enjoy them when I have a sore throat. Long live the tingly burn.

I’ve put on a chick flick. I love girly movies! Tonight I opted for “The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.” I’ve just re-read a few of the books from the series, in anticipation for the 2nd film which is coming out quite soon. I love this movie. I cry within the first few minutes– when Bee runs away from her mother’s funeral.

Obviously, I have my laptop as well, to provide a link to the outside world. My parents have gone off to the Sneek-a-Peek night at the Stampede, which is our 10-day rodeo/ carnival/ festival-type thingy. I’m quite bummed that I couldn’t go, but I’m pleased to be surrounded by some of my favourite things. Besides, it is unlikely I will miss out on the fun, I get to dress like a cowgirl for the next week and a bit at work. Check the Flickr for pics! Ha ha.

So, tell me, what do you do when you’re feeling under-the-weather?

One of my favourite games ever is Truth or Dare. I will play at any chance I get! Unfortunately, I am no longer 14, so I find it harder to find someone to play with me! Luckily, I have you guys as captive friends! So, here is what I propose…

This is a Truth or Dare game.

Here’s what I need from you:

Truth questions: ask anything you’ve wanted to know, no matter how embarrassing! No matter how silly!

Dares: you give me a dare, and I will do it. I will take a picture of myself doing said dare.

Obviously, there may need to be some limitations, if I get any dares or questions that are super inappropriate. But, in general, I am a very liberal and crazy girl, and will most likely do whatever you guys ask.

Feel free to ask questions or propose dares continuously! After I get a few, I will make a post with the answers and photos, and if there are any more afterward I will do another post.

Despite setbacks related to my status as a female, I had quite the fun weekend!

As you know, I left on Thursday afternoon, and we drove up to Pigeon Lake which is outside of Edmonton, toward the southwest. We set up our camp site, which was quite lovely. For my dog, Spice, it was beyond exciting! It was her first camping trip, and she loved it!

Friday was spent partially in the city of Edmonton, and about. We went to see my uncle, who is still in ICU at a hospital there. It was a tough visit. We found out some things that maybe we didn’t want to, and it was certainly one hell of a reality check. I don’t know what to say. I am so many different emotions when it comes to this. It’s all quite hard to work out, but we’re working on it, as a (large) family.

Our evenings were spent mainly with one of my sets of family containing my auntie, uncle and cousin Kayla. Which was fun. It’s great to catch up with everyone, and eat snacks. Yum yum, snacks.

Saturday was the big event! After some shopping, margaritas at 11.30am (Hey! It was noon SOMEWHERE!) and getting quite burnt at the beach, we got ready and headed off to my other auntie and uncle’s (My mother is the youngest of 7) wedding vow renewal. The ceremony was quite nice, except for the vows that outlined “submitting,” and “obeying,” ones husband. No thank-you. Please be reading me the man vows when I get married, ‘kay? I’ll obey nobody (and neither will any of my aunts for that matter), mwahahahaha.

The dinner was fantastic, as was the dance party following. If I ever have a wedding, I’m thinking a small thingy, involving the signing of documents (no church necessary) then a big dinner and dance party. Dinner shall be pasta and cheese, chicken and bacon, with a desert of cupcakes and a sundae bar. Nothing fancy, just things I love. <a href="http://aisling-b.net/gallery/?level=album&id=10"title="Gallery - Events - Camping" target="_self">You can find pictures here.

The last two days were just filled with relaxation, and queasyness for those of us who are prone to heat stroke (i.e. me). Currently, I am roasting from the insides due to 30C temperatures. Awful. Someone please move me to somewhere with regular temperatures, okay?

Overall, it was a nice trip. I hardly disagreed with the parentals. It was nice to see everyone. And I am definitely looking forward to our trip to Penticton in early August, although it will be 2x as long, 2.5x the driving, and 10x the heat.

When asked, yesterday evening, my mom said she most enjoyed sitting around, relaxing and reading with us and our dog hanging around as well. My dad said… well, he just continued snoring from his chair, which I’m going to interpret as a big thumbs up.

Well, I best be off to feel dizzy for a bit, and maybe watch the thunder and lightning currently raging outside. July 1st is Canada Day, so Happy Canada Day to all, especially the Canadians, obviously!

… well, essentially. I still have to work on Thursday (I’m writing this Wednesday evening, from my bed. Ooer. I bet you want to know what I’m wearing. Well, for your information, I am wearing pyjamas. Which are typical sleepwear.), from 8am until 1pm. We’re scheduled to leave here around 2pm, which won’t give me much time to blog, and potentially no time to even touch the computer at all! And I will be without one until June 30th!

But, it will be fun. I love family events! Living in a 19ft space with my parents will be tough, but I shall persevere. I shall also hope that somewhere will have nice cell phone reception, so I can check Twitter, and send tweets over.

I’m sure you’ll all me miss me. Loads. I’m sure <a href="http://www.calmbanana.co.uk"title="Rachael" target="_blank" class="extlink">Rachaely will miss me a whole bunch, because she promised me she would, so she’d better not forget!!! … I’m pretty sure she doesn’t read my blog, so everyone click that link to her so it will show up in her stats and she will maybe pop on over for a visit.

Also, I would like to take this time to congratulate the gorgey <a href="http://guitarangel.net"title="Melissa" target="_blank" class="extlink">Melissa and her fiancé (!) Chaz <a href="http://www.guitarangel.net/happenings/were-engaged/"title="We're Engaged! @ Guitarangel.net" target="_blank" class="extlink">on their engagement! I am super stoked for them! Melly is such a sweetie! So, obviously Chaz is quite the lucky guy. Ha ha. All the best, you two!

AND Happy 22nd to my darling Anny!! She doesn’t read this either, and she doesn’t have a link to track stats, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

And… that’s it! I’m looking forward to time away from work and the city and such. I’m not looking forward to what I’m sure will be a crowded inbox (probably spam-filled) and 37 unread forum pages.

Have a great weekend everyone!

It’s no secret that I love food. This is perhaps demonstrated by the constant stuffing of my face, or the fact that I post some of <a href="http://aisling-b.net/media/sustenance/"title="Sustenance" target="_blank">my favourite recipes on this very site. I’m not a picky eater, and I am quite willing to try most things once. I hope to never try <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Mountain_oysters"title="Prairie Oysters Wiki" target="_blank" class="extlink">prairie oysters, nor any other food related to the reproductive or excretory systems. But, I am open-minded about most things.

I am most open to Italian cusine. It is one of my biggest regrets in life– not being born into an Italian family. I love it all! Pasta is my love, the cheesier the better! Pizza! Gelato! Canneloni! Canoli! It’s all just so amazing!

I suppose I’m lucky to live in a place like Canada, which is so multicultural that I can have pasta, pizza and my other cheesy loves as often as I want (like, as soon as my father returns home with a pizza at my request.). Can you imagine where I would be if I lived in the Soviet Union?! What would I have eaten then?

I would have eaten <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borscht"title="Borscht" target="_blank" class="extlink">borscht. Which would have been an issue, since I am allergic to beets.

Are you a picky eater? What’s your favourite food? And is there anything you would ever refuse to try?

Right. Here’s a new one! Well, it’s not exactly “new.” I made it while playing around with a few things two weeks ago. And I decided to put it up today. It’s called “Calm,” because it’s generally… calm. Quite different from my regular noise and chaos, I suppose.

I can’t see any issues with it so far, other than the fact that it screws up in IE 5 and 6. Essentially, the navigation scoots over toward the right in both situations. I don’t know why, and I’m not feeling well, so I’m not up to finding out! So, if any of you can figure out a quick fix, please let me know. Otherwise, I suppose the IE <6ers can tough it out for a bit!

That’s all, really! Not up to much other than not feeling well, and preparing for this weekend’s camping trip. In case I forget to mention, I’m leaving town on Thursday evening and will not be back until some time on the 1st of July (Canada Day!). So, I wouldn’t expect any blogging during those days, and maybe not any before then (but, who knows, really? I’m a bit of a bloggy/chatty person. I could use a ramble sometime on Wednesday.).

Well, well. It seems my life has been quite busy lately, which is probably why I haven’t blogged about anything interesting. Maybe you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to?

Last weekend I got a chance to see some of my friends from high school. At first I wasn’t going to go since I’d had a rough week, what with my uncle being in the hospital and a fight I’d had with a certain friend. But, I ended up going anyway, and I was glad! I met up with the gang at East Side Mario’s and then we spent two hours trying to figure out what to do. After several elaborate plans fell through, we opted to go hang out in Thomas’s backyard. Which was super fun as we played truth or dare which is one of my favourite games!

This week was essentially filled up with work, my two days off which saw me busily running around to occupy myself, and back to work. This weekend I have been abandoned by my supervisor and partner in crime, so yesterday I spent my shift in deep dark boredom!

Last night I went out to visit my friend Emily, who just returned from Katimavik (the same program I did last year). It was great to see her. She lives at such a cool little place!

Today I’m working, as per usual, and then I’m off to a baby shower, and then going shopping to get more clothes for next week’s camping trip! We’re going up to Pigeon Lake, Alberta, where one of my sets of aunties and uncles are renewing their wedding vows after 25 years. My parents met at their wedding (one of my dad’s sisters is best friends with one of my mom’s sisters.) so I guess I kind of owe them something!

Other than that, summer is just kicking on up! My mother finishes work for two months on Friday (she works at an elementary school), so I’m hoping to drag her around to places! I want to go to the Zoo to see the animals and dinosaurs! And do lots of other fun city activities (because with the gas prices I doubt I’ll make it out of the city, save for our excursion next weekend and our trip to BC in August).

What are you all up to this summer?

I did something semi-difficult today that will hopefully lead to me being generally happier. I know, most of you see me as this really chipper and upbeat person, and truth is, I am like that a large chunk of the time. However, a few months ago, something happened which has caused me to be <a href="http://aisling-b.net/2008/02/16/i-would-expect-this-post-to-be-incoherent-if-i-were-you/"title="Expect this post to be incoherent." target="_blank">slightly emo at times, <a href="http://aisling-b.net/2008/06/09/dealing-with-difficult-and-negative-people/"title="Dealing with difficult and negative people." target="_blank">as of late. The problem is, the situation I was in was sort of a double-edged sword. The same thng that made me feel crappy, also made me unbelievably happy.

Today, I extracted this thing from my life, and I am looking forward to making things better. It will be difficult, but I have full confidence in my ability to be stubborn, and to stick it out.

But, I need advice. How do you quit something you’ve done everyday for the last 9 months? i suppose I’ll find out most of it as I go along– wish me luck!

Like most people my age, I have a severe dependency on technical gadgets. Here are the things I use:

First up is my laptop, which <a href="http://calmbanana.co.uk"title="Calm Banana" target="_blank" class="extlink">Rachaely named Pierre, because up until a few days ago it was just called Owner, and apparently that was unacceptable! It is an <a href="http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as5580.htm"title="Acer" target="_self" class="extlink">Acer Aspire 5580-6974, and although I only got it in August of last year, it is completely worn down, a sign that I should probably get a life. The “A” key is almost completely swiped, since I have to touch it every time I write my name, email address, URL and… well, the plethora of a’s that appear in the English language. I can’t say it wasn’t a good investment. I use it for blogging, chatting with my friends whom are all scattered around the country, organizing photos, reading news, editing videos, recording vocals and instruments and mixing, and so much more. And it still runs very smoothly! I also have a nifty <a href="http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/external/freeagent_pro_data_movers/"title="Seagate" target="_blank" class="extlink">external hard drive and <a href="http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboo.cfm"title="Wacom" target="_blank" class="extlink">tablet that can probably be shoved in this same computer-centric category!

I am absolutely inseparable from my iPod. It’s a <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/features.html"title="iPod" target="_blank" class="extlink">black 80GB Classic. It doesn’t carry even 1/3rd of my music collection as of yet, because I seem to be lazy on the uploading front, but it still has a good 1100 songs to provide me with entertainment while I’m on the bus, on breaks at work, doing dishes and other chores, and while I’m lying in bed thinking big thoughts before sleeping. I’m even listening to it right now! The song is “<a href="http://www.kain.ca/section/discographie/116/sonore/121#content"title="Mexico" target="_blank" class="extlink">Mexico,” by <a href="http://www.kain.ca/"title="Kain" target="_blank" class="extlink">Kain. It’s a Quebecois (French) song, that reminds me of someone special. <345

My cell phone ranks slightly lower than my other tech gadgets, mainly because I dislike speaking on the phone! But, I do enjoy texting, and updating <a href="http://twitter.com/aisy"title="Twitter" target="_blank" class="extlink">Twitter from wherever I am! It is a<a href="http://ca.lge.com/en/products/model/detail/cdmamobilephone_lg8500chocolate%3Csup%3Etm%3Csup%3E.jhtml"title="LG" target="_blank" class="extlink"> LG Chocolate 8500 phone and it gets the job done.

Finally, my camera, which is a <a href="http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/coolpix/s550/index.htm"title="Nikon" target="_blank" class="extlink">Nikon Coolpix S550. It’s 10 Megapixels and absolutely fantastic. It takes great photos, it’s little, it’s cute, and with its black colour it matches the majority of my other gadgets! Also, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashton_Kutcher"title="Ashton Wiki" target="_blank" class="extlink">Ashton Kutcher does commercials for it, and I love him.

What are your favourite/ prized gadgets? What’s on your wishlist?

I am a big fan of independent film. I am a big fan of oddity and perversion. I love films that are kinky. It may seem a bit odd for me to admit to this on my blog, which is undoubtedly public, and easily found by family members, but NEWS FLASH: I am 20 years old!

Currently, Canadian film makers are able to apply for a few different grants and tax credits to encourage Canadian media, art and expression. However, soon, this may change thanks to an amendment regarding Bill C-10 (the Income Tax Act), which has recently been introduced by the Conservative MPs. The change, which is currently being reviewed in the Senate, would see that tax credits be denied for projects deemed “offencive,” by the Conservatives. One of these films, (I’m about to use a bad word) is the Toronto Film Festival screened (here it comes…), <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0913445/"title="YPF IMDb" target="_blank" class="extlink">Young People Fucking. (Okay, I said it. Relax.) I’m sure you can imagine what said film is about, and why it may be facing Conservative scrutiny.

But is threatening film makers in this way not censorship? And is censorship not against our constitutional rights?

That is what quite a few people and panels are trying to get to the bottom of. I haven’t had a chance to see this film yet, though I would like to, but I have researched it a bit, and formed a few opinions. Just because a film has an expletive in the title that provokes graphic imagery, does not mean that it is pornographic. Sex is a dominant theme, but used to portray human relationships and interactions. During a screening for MPs in Ottawa, all of which were opposition members (Liberals, NDPs, etc.) many praised the film as a “social reality check,” and a “serious explanation of relationships,” while being “funny and fun.”

These are the most important films to see, in my opinion. And it would be a shame to miss out on such a major insight because of something as silly as censorship. Censorship is common in many countries, but it shouldn’t be here. It also is dreadfully unfair to Canada’s budding and blooming film makers, most of whom probably aren’t elderly Conservative Parliament members, and therefore hold different values, and voices that don’t deserve to be silenced this early in the game! We need to fight for our art, our expression, our relationships. Sex is a big part of our society, and what are films but a fingerprint of our world?

What do you think of the censorship of such films? Do you think the measures of the Bill C-10 amendment are just and necessary? Is sex really that taboo of a subject in our lives?
